I designed a book jacket based on the song “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” by the band Cage the Elephant, written by band member Matt Schultz. I drew inspiration from the music video which features many shots located in a desert, and I wanted the design to emphasize a wicked feeling without portraying it too literally. The visual of dead trees and birds of prey gives a universally eerie feeling and fits the tone of the song.
Given the challenge of redesigning an existing book cover, I chose a book from my favorite series: A Game of Thrones. I took a more simplistic and contemporary approach to the design by keeping a small color palette with a single highlighting color.
The silhouette of the iconic throne draws the readers attention, and the sword on the back cover hints to the original cover design. The font choice brings the medieval tone of the story into this design.
'Pulled Under' was one of my first design projects from freshman year of college. This was a project I was challenged with re-doing from scratch in only a single day. The inspiration behind the title and cover art came from how I felt under the immense pressure of a very limited, strict time frame.
